Compliance status
This website is partially compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) version 2.1 at Level AA, due to the known issues listed in this statement.
We also design to meet EN 301 549 (the European standard for ICT accessibility, adopted in UK law) and our obligations under the Equality Act 2010 to make reasonable adjustments.
What we have done to make this website accessible
We have built a number of accessibility features directly into the site. These are available on every page without needing to adjust browser or operating system settings.
Accessibility toolbar
A persistent accessibility panel is available via the “Accessibility” button on the right-hand side of every page. It provides the following controls, all of which are saved to your browser for future visits:
- Text size adjustment — seven steps from 80% to 150% of the base font size
- High contrast mode — black background with white text and high-contrast interactive elements
- Yellow on black — yellow text on a black background, a common preference for users with visual impairments
- Dark mode — a low-brightness dark colour scheme for reduced eye strain
- Dyslexia friendly font — switches to OpenDyslexic with increased letter and word spacing
- Enhanced focus indicators — high-visibility outlines on all focused elements, in line with WCAG 2.4.7
- Reduce motion — disables all animations and transitions, in line with WCAG 2.3.3
- Increased line spacing — applies wider line height across all body text, in line with WCAG 1.4.12
Keyboard and screen reader support
All interactive elements on the site are reachable and operable by keyboard alone. A visible skip-to-content link appears at the top of each page on keyboard focus. ARIA landmarks (nav, main, footer) are used throughout to support screen reader navigation. Dialogs, including the cookie preferences modal and accessibility panel, carry role="dialog", aria-label, and aria-modal attributes. Toggle controls use role="switch" and aria-checked to communicate state to assistive technology.
Colour and contrast
Colour contrast ratios meet or exceed 4.5:1 for normal text and 3:1 for large text in the default colour scheme, in line with WCAG 1.4.3. The high contrast and yellow on black schemes are designed to exceed these thresholds significantly.
Structure and language
All pages declare a language attribute (lang="en"). A logical heading hierarchy (H1–H3) is used throughout. All images carry appropriate alt text or aria-hidden attributes where decorative. Text can be resized up to 200% without loss of content or functionality, in line with WCAG 1.4.4.
Motion and animation
The site detects the prefers-reduced-motion media query on first visit and automatically enables the reduce motion setting where this preference is active. Animated number counters on the homepage also respect this preference.
User preference persistence
All accessibility settings — font size, colour scheme, and all toggle states — are stored via localStorage and restored automatically on return visits. Settings are applied before the page renders to avoid visible flicker.
Known accessibility issues
We are aware of the following limitations and are working to address them:
- Some third-party content linked from our site, including NHS pages, is outside our control and may not fully conform to WCAG 2.1 AA.
- The accessibility toolbar colour scheme overrides may not cascade consistently to all dynamically generated content in all browsers. We test and refine this iteratively.
